IHS Studies - Latin America
|
The Latin America region offers world class E&P opportunities and many different play opportunities, especially onshore for niche players. This is despite some political populism, disputes and economic turmoil. There are currently over 4,200 companies active in the region and combined on and offshore reserves stand at 261,097 mmbo.
Argentina - Five major prospective and proven basins are currently producing in the country. Several other frontier basins have been poorly explored and are considered prospective but largely unproven.
Brazil - Brazil has six main producing basins onshore and five offshore. Additionally there are numerous frontier basins that are relatively unexplored. Offshore the main producing basins of Campos, Espirito Santa, and Santos are considered the most prospective from the shelf to the ultra deepwater in a variety of play types and a number of giant discoveries still remain to be found. Many of the frontier basins have seen little drilling or seismic activity. |

Colombia - Modified its Hydrocarbons Law and contract terms during late 2003/early 2004 making the country one of the more attractive in Latin America with regards to fiscal terms. About 50 companies are currently operating in Colombia and more are expected to join them with the improved contract terms.
Ecuador - The OCP oil pipeline was completed in late 2003 and this opens Ecuador to increased activity. The two main prospective onshore basins and the offshore Gulf of Guayquil region, that are the most attractive for additional discoveries.
Peru - Major prospective basins currently are Ucayali, Maranon and Talara. Talara is traditionally the most important and productive. The country has in 2003 instituted a much improved royalty system to attract operators.
Trinidad and Tobago - Trinidad and Tobago is the Caribbean's largest producer of oil and gas, and the leading supplier of natural gas to the U.S.
Venezuela - Has four major sedimentary basins: Eastern, Western (Maracaibo), Barinas Apure, which combined account for most of the country’s oil production; and the largely unexplored offshore Northern basin. It has the Western Hemisphere's largest conventional proven oil reserves at 76 billion barrels, as of January 2003 and is among the top ten crude, oil producers in the world.
Worldwide Whilst concentrating on a single region to provide the focus for a concerted E&P effort is necessary, it is important to retain a global overview. These studies help evaluate and plan your long term direction, highlighting trends and ensuring that your portfolio is correctly orientated to meet the challenges of the future.

FOCUS on Mexico: The Natural Gas Chain - Oportunities Arising from Changing Policies, 2001 For the first time in many years Mexico is allowing private companies to participate in the country's upstream sector to help cope with the ever expanding demand for natural gas. It is necessary to understand the implications to all aspects of both the up and downstream sectors in the Mexican gas industry, in order to fully comprehend these opportunities. To facilitate this knowledge, this report provides information on the entire natural gas chain, including discussions on hydrocarbon geology, proven and potential reserves, basin reviews, an analysis of past and present production plus present and future supply and demand scenarios.
- Mexico's present production rate of 4.4 Bcfg/d will need to increase to about 10 Bcfg/d by 2010 for the country to be self sufficient, as gas demand is expected to rise by 5 to 7% annually.
- The study aids understanding of the political situation with respect to the energy industry and looks at ways in which the constitution and fiscal situation might change to allow the opening of the sector. Typical analogue regimes from comparative countries are discussed and modelled.
- Analysis of the gas reserves of Mexico, covering produced, producing and unproduced fields and discoveries, is given. This information is combined with abundantly illustrated and detailed basin by basin geological information to help companies make informed 'yet to find' estimates of remaining gas in Mexico.
- Growth in production is discussed, based upon developable reserves at various gas price
scenarios with development and net back costs calculated for each potential producing basin. This study is presented in an interactive, digital format on a single CID, in html and pdf format, viewable through a web browser, allowing immediate access to all data, information and illustrations.

Deepwater Exploration Opportunities Brazilian Basins, 1998 Brazil's hydrocarbon future lies in deepwater exploration. Pre requisites for success are a knowledge of the location of thick, well defined, continuous reservoirs with high flow rates; unfaulted simple traps; and thick source rocks at present day peak generation stage. This study of the deepwater Brazilian Basins can help supply this vital information, as it is based on the geological interpretation and analysis of regional seismic sections and integrates a broad knowledge of Atlantic deepwater geology.
- More than 40 regional seismic sections in an atlas format, interpreted and reproduced with superimposed interpretation.
- In order to assess the timing and probability of hydrocarbon charge, about 30 sites distributed from the upper slope to the abyssal plain have been modelled and maturity simulations undertaken, combining burial and thermal histories, to test the sensitivity of hydrocarbon generation.
- The report identifies and develops several new plays specific to the upper slope, the lower slope and the abyssal plain.
- There is extensive discussion of the huge rafted structures and wide ranging turbidite systems, anticipated to provide large, good quality combination or stratigraphic traps.
- The study is available in A3 paper format or as an interactive dcIf based CD.
- Deepwater Exploration Opportunities: South Atlantic African Basins is also available, enabling the full picture of opportunities in the whole cleepwater Atlantic realm to be reviewed.

World's Gas Potential, 1996 By combining the wealth of data available through the IHS database with penetrative analysis by leading experts, this study forecasts not only the amount of reserves remaining to be found, but the number and size distribution of the fields and the number of wildcats required to discover them. The report assesses in detail seven selected provinces that together hold almost half the world's gas potential, then looks at North America, which has unique reporting practices and traditions, before going on to assemble a global assessment.
- The study shows that the world has produced 2,200 Tcf (62 T.m3) of gas; has reserves of 4,650 Tcf (132 T.m3) and a realistic undiscovered potential of 2,400 Tcf (68 Tm3).
- Discussion includes examination of the various ways to assess gas potential, such as field distribution analysis and derivative logistic or Hubbert curves.
- The seven areas discussed in detail are the Ahnet Timmoun System in Algeria,
Barrow Dampierre Rankin, Australia; North of Western Siberia, Russia; Niger Delta, Nigeria; Anglo Dutch Basin, UK, Netherlands and Germany; Po Adriatic Gas. System, Italy; Qusaiba Sudair Gas System, Middle East.
- Written in conjunction with three of the world's leading experts on the prediction of the world's resources: Jean LaHerrere, Alain Perrodon and Colin Campbell.
