Why IHS?

IHS's roots in tracking current U.S. activity and understanding trends go back more than 75 years.

The integration of two industry leaders – Petroleum Information and Dwights – into IHS in the 1990s has created an unparalleled foundation for comprehensive, quality data and editorial, as well as proven, innovative analysis tools and expert studies for leveraging that information.

Our vast national scouting network and second-to-none processes for quality control and normalization of data continue to be the cornerstone of our commitment to your success. Some highlights:

  • IHS has the largest scouting organization – by far – of any commercial data provider in the U.S., calling on more than 2,400 active contacts. They actively collect and report on well status throughout stages of drilling, tracking dozens of data types ranging from spud data, to formation at total depth, to stuck drill pipe, to treatment details such as perforation shutoffs.

During 2003, for example, our scouts added more than 13,300 completions and 88,900 updates to our well file. For more on data enhancements by state, view our U.S. Data Demo.

  • Our production and well information is vast, starting from the largest domestic historical data – the combination of Petroleum Information and Dwights Energydata files – and adding information from more than 28 state and federal agencies. Extensive edits, checks and interrogations prevent data anomalies from entering our files.
  • Decades of experience enable us to understand your exploration workflows and enhance the data for specific purposes. For example, we input the age and name of the production formation when reservoirs and formations are not reported by state agencies, or are too ambiguous to be useful. Our permit and current activity news is easy to access and filter using standard reports and custom queries, all developed based on years of feedback from our “Yellow Top” report customers.
  • The addition of QC Data and Data Logic Services to the IHS family has added an extensive log data library, petrophysical services and data archival expertise and outsourcing. Log data is easily accessible online and directly from our production and well databases, giving you “all-in-one” tools for canvassing a region or a property for all publicly available data.
  • Our PowerTools software for conducting fast evaluations and economics, drawing directly on our data, greatly reduces the time needed to conduct evaluations, and enables significantly more wells to be included in your assessment.
  • Our innovative deepwater production performance studies build on our production data, well data, and engineering analysis tools, adding seismic data and a multidisciplinary team's insights to give you benchmarks for making the best exploration decisions.
