Recent Exploration in Sri Lanka

Having entered into an agreement with Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC, Ceypetco) to undertake a non-exclusive, multi-client 2D seismic programme over the island’s territorial waters, TGS-Nopec commenced Phase I of its seismic acquisition programme over the deep waters of the Gulf of Mannar in June 2001.

Tied-in to the 1981 Pearl 1 exploration well on the northern tip of a NNE-SSW seismic line, the acquisition of 1,218.4km 2D seismic was completed later the same month and paved the way for a Phase II acquisition programme. Acquisition was limited by the Indian border to the north west and by deep water (2,000m+) to the south.

The survey was the first exploration work conducted in Sri Lanka since between 1974-1981 when the country was assisted by US and Russian companies in the drilling of seven exploration wells (four offshore and three onshore).

The Phase II seismic programme was undertaken between February-March 2005, when a total of 4,602.62km 2D seismic was acquired - the survey, which was undertaken in collaboration with Fugro Geoteam, also detailing the shelf area to the south of the Phase I acquisition area lying to the south west of the island.

A satellite gravity survey of Sri Lanka’s offshore was also undertaken in 2002 by Swedish company Petroscan.
