Q. What is the advantage of using SubPUMP as opposed to using other products?
A. SubPUMP is the leading ESP design / analysis program from an independent source. IHS is not a pump manufacturer and has no vested interest in pump sales. We incorporate equipment data from every leading manufacturer. We hope this will result in you obtaining reliable, independent answers.

Q. How hard is it to learn and use SubPUMP?
A. SubPUMP is designed to be very user-friendly and very easy to learn. With some background in ESP, you can easily use SubPUMP for design and analysis.

Q. I am familiar with the use of metric units. Do I have to use US field units?
A. SubPUMP provides three standard systems: US Oilfield, International Metric, and Canadian Oilfield, which you can select or you can design your own custom units systems to meet your particular needs.

Q. How do I design a system with 100% water?
A. The design is not any different than other situations. Only you should make sure that water cut is 100%, Dead oil option under Bubble Point in Fluids dialog is selected, and GLR is zero.

Q. What is the difference between Design and Analysis modes?
A. Design used to size the equipment for a new system. Analysis is for analyzing the existing installations and use the existing equipment in the well.

Q. Can I see the Outflow performance curve for my well system?
A. The outflow curve may be displayed together with the inflow curve to analyze the operating point of the well. Select "Show Outflow Curve on Inflow Performance" in View menu\Graph Selection.

Q. I get the same warning messages every time I do calculations. How can I change this to see them only once?
A. You can set the program to display warning messages in two ways: every time you perform calculations or only after the first occurrence. Select "Warn First Occurrence Only" in Options menu\System Preferences…\Warnings tab.

Q. Is it possible to model annular flow with SubPump?
A. Yes, both tubular and annular flow may be modeled in the wellbore.

Q. Can I add a new pump or motor to the equipment database?
A. A new pump can be added if there is a pump with behavior relatively similar to that of the one being added. You cannot add a new motor.

Q. How do I change the behavior of the pump and use it for design or analysis?
A. Enter the new pump curve data in Tools menu/ Pump Test. Then save it in both PUMP and INNVENTORY file. Use the INVENTORY file for design or analysis.

Q. Where is the previously selected pump in the pump list? I had selected the pump when I created the file.
A. The culling may have changed. Remove the check for the Pump List Culling in Options menu/System Preferences/Equipment culling tab.

Q. I selected a motor when I created the file - where is it now?
A. The culling may have changed. Remove the check for the Motor List Culling in Options menu/System Preferences/Equipment culling tab.

Q. I designed the system with SubPUMP, but now I don't see the motor in the list for analysis. How do I make it appear in the motor list?
A. Check the casing size and make sure that the motor fits in the casing. Then check the Casing Clearance in the Options menu/ System Preferences . . ./Preferences tab.

Q. All the cables are out of range. What is wrong?
A. Check the Cable section in the Limit report to find out what exactly is out of range.

Q. How can I analyze the system with measured flow rate and pump intake pressure instead of inflow data?
A. SubPUMP has an option for Intake pressure and flow rate in Analysis.

Q. How come when I change from Design to Analysis mode, or visa versa, sometimes the results do not match?
A. For your convenience, we allow you to easily change between modes. SubPUMP transfers the data when this is done. However, we strongly recommend that you check all the data when you switch between modes.

Q. If I have some PVT data available, how are these data combined with the correlations?
A. The PVT data entered in the fluid properties are used in SubPUMP to adjust the values calculated using the PVT correlations.

Q. Does the program calculate the temperature rise in the motor?
A. Heat rise information is available for Reda motors only. Heat rise calculations include well fluid temperature, skin temperature, average winding temperature and total winding temperature.

Q. How do I change the text attributes and the graph colors?
A. Move the mouse on the graph to the object you want to change (i.e., curve, X&Y axis, etc.) and double click. A menu will appear with the formatting options available. Note: The graph title box cannot be edited.

Q. I cannot see the curve(s) after calculation is completed.
A. If results show in the detailed report, the plot background color and the line color are the same. Change the line color.
