IHS Studies - Middle East

The Middle East contains over two thirds of the world's remaining oil reserves and one third of its remaining gas reserves. It is currently responsible for approximately 30% of the daily world oil production, a share likely to rise substantially over the coming decades.

It is difficult to overstate its importance to the international energy industry and its position in global economic stability.

With under explored areas such as the Paleozoic and Triassic sections of the northern Arabian Plate, covering north western Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, western Iraq, it is immediately apparent that there is great opportunity to further unlock the hydrocarbon potential of this prolific area. The following studies identify the location of the Paleozoic and Triassic systems; introduce new play concepts; link plays and petroleum systems to known fields and discoveries; analyses the proved hydrocarbon reserves of fields and discoveries; and identify, map and highlight the potential in over 500 undrilled structures.

4.1.1 2nd Order Sequence Stratigraphic Play Mapping of Arabian Plate Oil and Gas Fields, 2002

The report maps the stratigraphic distribution of all Arabian Plate oil and gas resources at both the megasequence and 2nd order depositional sequence levels. This study demonstrates that it is possible to coherently map the chronostratigraphic occurrence and distribution of petroleum throughout the entire sedimentary succession across the whole Arabian Plate.

  • Makes an assessment of the potential geographic and stratigraphic controls over the occurrence and distribution of all known petroleum across the Arabian Plate.
  • Fully illustrated with 35 A4 colour figures and 31 AO colour enclosures.

4.1.2 FOCUS on North West Arabia: The Hydrocarbon Potential of the
Underexplored

Paleozoic & Triassic Petroleum Systems, 2003

Covering Jordan, Syria, western Iraq and north western Saudi Arabia, this study examines in detail the hydrocarbon potential of the poorly explored Paleozoic and Triassic sediments of the north western part of the Arabian Plate. It identifies a number of new and underexplored plays and petroleum systems, which are linked and compared to known analogous fields and discoveries.

  • An interactive CID providing discussions on exploration and development history, basin
tectonics, stratigraphy, petroleum systems, play fairways and infrastructure together with up to date field and reservoir data on analogous fields.
  • A unique database of 650 drilled and undrilled prospects, with reserves estimates and 58
    Paleozoic & Triassic fields.
  • Exclusively developed, interactive prospects Explorer, providing a GIS style method of
    accessing all available data.
  • 25 AO size colour maps, including 2 unique field & prospects maps, 6 play maps, 9 maturity and fairway maps and 2 specially commissioned, original satellite mosaic sheets with geological interpretation, provided in pdf, GIs and paper format.
  • This study is of considerable value to those interested in entering the area or expanding their existing interests, as it reveals whole new areas for exploration.

4.2.1 FOCUS on Iran: Future Development Opportunities, 2001

An interactive report presenting 21 attractive projects offered by the Iranian authorities. Each project includes detailed geological and reservoir engineering background. This study examines future development opportunities, highlights the importance of gas reinjection and provides detailed information on existing projects and future requirements.

  • A detailed infrastructure map, in both paper and electronic format, accompanies the report.
  • Illustrated with 83 colour figures and 34 tables.

4.2.2 Iran Buy Back Projects 2001 Edition

This report looks at the projects awarded and still available as a result of the 1998 (Second Buy Back Round). Headings covered: Country Profile, Petroleum Legislation, Onshore Development Projects, Offshore Development Projects, Onshore Exploration Blocks, Offshore Exploration Blocks, Onshore/Offshore Exploration Blocks.

4.2.3 Iran Oil and Gas Industry, 1996

An extensive review of previous and current upstream activity, hydrocarbon geology, petroleum systems and exploration history. Includes detailed sequence stratigraphic analysis of the sedimentary successions and the petroleum systems.

4.2.4 Iran Country Monitor, 1996

The report has a strong geological bias and looks at the Iranian basins under the broad headings: Country Overview, Geology, Exploration, Development and Production.

4.3.1 Iraq: An Atlas of Fields and Prospects, 1999

Iraq has the world's second largest crude reserves after Saudi Arabia, and quite possibly the world's largest potential undiscovered reserves. This report describes and quantifies this potential, using structural prospects and geological knowledge and referencing prospects to known fields with similar geological structures or on the same structural trend. The study includes a detailed description of the hydrocarbon geology of Iraq and links this to the extensive information on fields and prospects in Iraq.

  • Fully searchable Access database of 88 fields and discoveries in Iraq, covering the Zagros, Mesopotamian and Western Desert area.
  • Fully searchable Access database of 417 prospects, also illustrated with structure maps, cross sections and stratigraphic columns, and including more than 150 prospects in the sparsely explored Western Desert.
  • Accurate reappraisal of information on known reserves and production together with analysis of the petroleum geology, which allows an estimation of reserves for the identified prospects and therefore of total reserves for the whole country.
  • Detailed discussion of the basin tectonics, stratigraphy and hydrocarbon geology and their effect on the petroleum systems of Iraq.
  • A review of the economic background, and the exploration, development and production history of Iraq.
  • This study represents a comprehensive document suitable for any company that is either already participating in or is considering an investment in the Iraqi hydrocarbon industry.

4.3.2 Iraq Oil and Gas Industry, 1999

An extensive review of previous and current upstream activity, hydrocarbon geology, petroleum systems exploration and development history.

4.3.3 The Iraq Country Monitor, 1994

The report has a strong geological bias and looks at the Iraqi basins under the broad headings: Country Overview, Geology, Exploration, Development and Production.

  • Fully illustrated and with field examples.

4.4.1

Sytria Country Monitor, 1996

The report discusses the tectonic and geological framework of Syria. Fields and discoveries are classified according to plays and petroleum systems and exploration possibilities are discussed.

4.5.1 Petroleum Geology of Southeast Turkey and Adjacent Regions, 1985

The study reviews the petroleum geology of Southeast Turkey with special emphasis on Pre Cretaceous prospects.

4.6.1 Yemen Country Monitor, 1997

The report summarises the status of exploration, production and development in the main basins of Yemen and reviews exploration opportunities.
