Midstream Database
Comprehensive infrastructure data for screening and project development
Energy availability has become a top-priority issue worldwide for producers and consumers alike. For oil and gas companies, access to infrastructure is a defining factor in determining whether increasing demand for their products can be translated into profitable production. “Stranded gas”, for example, is emerging as an enormous opportunity due to the burgeoning consumption of this clean fuel in developing economies such as China and India, as well as in the established US and European markets now facing declining local supplies. Following years of surplus capacity in many regions, adequate oil refining capabilities to meet the global refined product slate and varied regional specifications are also in question. In the meantime, gas sector deregulation in many countries has increased the alternatives available and magnified their potential impact on profitability.
Any meaningful analysis of oil and gas infrastructure must be made in tandem with broader upstream developments, including exploration and production (E&P) activity and political risk factors. As the top provider of E&P data worldwide, IHS offers a comprehensive Midstream Database that is fully integrated with our upstream data, GIS and analytical products. View demo & Thailand case study.

Database Content
IHS offers two versions of our unique Midstream Database, enabling both early screening and more advanced analysis of infrastructure issues that can impact the success of your project and asset decisions.
The Midstream Basic Data Module provides you with key data on the location, capacity and ownership of oil and gas transportation, processing and primary market infrastructures worldwide (exclusive of the United States and Canada). Coverage includes:
- Pipelines
- Ports
- LNG facilities
- Gas processing plants
- Refineries
- Electric power plants
- Primary petrochemical facilities (olefin, methanol, ammonia and urea fertilizers)
Both facilities in operation and new projects, including current status, are captured in the database, which is updated daily.
The Midstream Extended Data Module provides an additional level of detail needed to bring projects to fruition successfully:
- Pipeline utilization rates and tariffs – Identifies spare capacity, the need for new investment, and attributes for pipeline compressor/pumping stations and storage facilities.
- Gas distribution structures – Quantifies local gas markets in terms of consumption by type of consumer (residential, industrial, electric power), and suppliers by source, prices and pipeline interconnects. Also specifies type of sales transaction (franchise distributor, direct producer/end user sale, gas marketer).
- Industrial gas customers (large) – Identifies additional primary outlets for gas production. Gas consumption potential is based on facility size.
- Macro-economic and energy profile data – GDP, population, energy balances by fuel type, consuming sector and import/export position, and electricity generation by fuel type provide important information regarding market size, and growth patterns. Accessing this data through IHS's GIS tools facilitates the analysis of the growth potential in a country's oil and gas market.
The IHS Advantage
- IHS's Midstream and E&P Databases are fully integrated, so your full project analysis can easily integrate midstream links with factors such as regional-scale production, political risk, discovery economics, competitive activity and fiscal terms.
- Key facilities data for oil & gas transportation, processing and primary market infrastructure are represented in a standard database structure. This allows you to query and readily identify facilities meeting specified criteria with respect to size, status, operating company, location, etc.
- Ongoing updating provides the current status and attributes for infrastructure projects and new additions.
- Using our common GIS analytical tools (EDIN-GIS or ProbE), you can easily create and display maps of infrastructure features alongside other E&P layers.
- Having key infrastructure data at your fingertips helps you answer questions from management and build presentations quickly and easily.
- You can leverage scarce staff resources for data analysis rather than data gathering and verification.
Midstream Data provides decision support for:
- New ventures screening – Improve accuracy and consistency of infrastructure cost estimates and market options studies.
- Field development – Reduce cycle time and increase accuracy of planning for transport, processing and marketing of oil and gas.
- Gas and power – Quickly assess the supply/ demand balance for electric power generation in a market, using plant data for generation capacity by fuel type, expansion plans, electricity demand growth, gas source options and pipeline access.
- Gas sales and distribution – Use market profiles, as defined by customer class and structural sales options, to design the most profitable gas sales or purchasing program.
- Joint venture projects – Quantify key risk factors, such as gas market growth and transport availability, to assess profitability of large-scale investments aimed at monetizing “stranded gas.”
- Strategic planning – Study infrastructure developments at the regional and sector levels to assist in market entry/exit decisions.
