Q. What is Global E & P Service (GEPS)?
A.Global E & P Service (GEPS) is a family of information products covering global E & P (excluding North America). This includes the Daily Alert, the weekly International Oil Letter, and the continuously updated (and monthly compiled) GEPS Reports.

Q. What is the current version of Global E & P Service (GEPS)?
A. Since Global E & P Service (GEPS) is a Web-based products, it does not have a specific version number. It is constantly evolving, and the technology we use allows us to make changes immediately and on-the-fly without having to reversion the products.

Q. How will I know when there are updates to the functionality of Global E & P Service (GEPS)?
A. You will be notified via e-mail when major updates are made.

Q. How do I install Global E & P Service (GEPS)?
A. Since Global E & P Service (GEPS) is a Web-based products, there is not a program that we create that is necessary for you to install. However, you do need to have one of the most recent Web browsers in order to use Global E & P Service (GEPS).

Q. What are the requirements?
A. The minimum requirements are:
- Recommend Internet access at 56 Kbps or higher
- Microsoft® Internet Explorer 4.0 with Service Pack 2 and the Microsoft virtual machine (or higher).
- 32 MB RAM
- Pentium-compatible processor
- Recommended screen resolution set at 800X600 pixels
- Valid e-mail address
- Browser set properly to the settings detailed below

Q. How can I tell if I already have the Microsoft virtual machine?
A. To determine if you have the Microsoft virtual machine, you'll need to browse to http://www.windowsupdate.com/ and select 'Product Updates'. (If you get prompted to install 'Microsoft's Active Setup', select 'Yes'.) On the next page, there will be a 'Critical Updates' category. If 'Microsoft virtual machine' is not listed in this section, you already have it. If it is listed, put a check in the box next to 'Microsoft virtual machine', select the 'Download' button in the upper right portion of the screen, and follow the directions on the screen to download and install it.

Q. What settings do I need for Microsoft® Internet Explorer 5.5 SP1 and SP2, and Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 OR Mozilla Firefox?
A. Recommended Internet access at 1MB or higher, Recommended screen resolution set at 800X600.
Note: In order to send reports to others in your organization by email, you must reconfigure your Internet Explorer options to enable your email program.
To reconfigure your Internet Explorer options:
- In Internet Explorer, select Tools menu > Internet Options
- The Internet Options dialog box displays
- Click the Programs tab
- Click the down arrow in the Email list box to view and select the email option of your choice
- Click Apply
- Your selection is applied to your Internet options
- Click OK to exit the dialog box
Note: You must turn off all pop-up blockers for the product to work correctly.

Q. How about Netscape?
A. For Netscape users to access GEPS or Drilling Wire on the Web, please set preferences as described below:
- From browser main menu, click EDIT
- Select PREFERENCES
- Under ADVANCED, select HTTP Networking
- On the HTTP Networking page, under 'Direct Connection' options: make sure 'Use HTTP 1.0' is selected

Q. How do I get an account (user name and password)?
A. Please refer to your IHS sales representative who will be pleased to discuss your requirements with you and arrange for an account to be created.

Q. Are my user name and password case sensitive?
A. No, they are not case sensitive. However, since many other password types are case sensitive, we recommend always using lower-case letters.

Q. How do I log in?
A. To log in:
- Visit the IHS Web site at http://www.ihs.com/energy.
- From the navigation bar on the top, select 'Subscribers Login'.
- Under the 'Subscribers Login' section, select 'Global E & P Service (GEPS)'.
- On the next page, select the 'Log In' button and enter your user name and password when prompted.
- On the next page, select the 'GEPS Online', 'Daily Alert', or 'International Oil Letter' tab as is appropriate for the data you wish to examine.

Q. Why has the log in procedure changed?
A. The log in procedure has been changed as a part of IHS's effort to offer a suite of worldwide Internet products for the energy and petroleum industry from a single Internet location.

A. No, they have not changed.

Q. Where do I go now for the old 'Global E & P Service (GEPS): Online Coverage'?
A. After you log in to Global E & P Service (GEPS), simply select the 'GEPS Online' tab from the top and select which region you wish to examine coverage on.

A. After you log in to Global E & P Service (GEPS), simply select the 'Daily Alert' tab from the top.

Q. How does the new system differentiate between the old 'Global E & P Service (GEPS): Daily Alert Service' and 'Global E & P Service (GEPS): Daily Alert Compiled'?
A. To streamline the products delivery, the default view for Daily Alert will be the compiled view (which can be selected over previous days by selecting the day you wish to see from the calendar grid in the column on the left). You can still access the non-compiled daily bulletins by using the 'Search' feature of Daily Alert.

Q. How far back can I go to select the previous compiled Daily Alerts?
A. You can select previous compiled Daily Alerts for the current month and the previous month.

Q. Where do I go now for the old 'Global E & P Service (GEPS): Report/Map Download'?
A. After you log in to Global E & P Service (GEPS), simply select the 'GEPS Reports' tab from the top and select which region you wish to examine coverage on. You will then see a menu that displays the 'Download', 'Maps', and 'Annual Synopsis' subsections (which correspond with the old 'GEPS Reports', 'Maps', and 'Annual Reports' subsections respectively).

Q.If I want to download a map from a specific country, do I need to search in the 'Maps' subsection for that specific country?
A.While you can certainly find your map that way, you can also download the map you are looking for from the 'Maps' subsection of the region the country is part of, thereby saving you a few steps.

Q. How can I view the maps?
A. There are two possible ways to view the maps. If your Web browser is configured to be able to view Adobe® Acrobat® (.pdf) files directly, you can simply select the map icon to view it. If you wish to view the map in its own browser window, right click on the map icon and select 'Open in a New Window' (if you are using Netscape® Communicator) or 'Open Link in a New Window' (if you are using Microsoft® Internet Explorer). Alternate, you can save the Adobe® Acrobat® (.pdf) file to disk and view it with Adobe Acrobat® Reader (or any other program capable of viewing .pdf files) at your leisure. To save the map to disk, right click the map icon and select 'Save Image As...' (if you are using Netscape® Communicator) or 'Save Target As... (if you are using Microsoft® Internet Explorer).

Q. What happened to the IFDU downloads available through the old 'Global E & P Service (GEPS): Report/Map Download'?
A. The IFDU downloads are now available through IFDU Downloads.

Q. What format is the large color map in from the 'Maps' subsection?
A. The maps are saved in Adobe® Acrobat® (.pdf) format and can be opened using the Adobe Acrobat® Reader program, which is available as a free download from Adobe®.

Q. What can I do when I plot the Adobe® Acrobat® file of the large color map and it comes out at half scale?
A. Under some circumstances the file does plot at half scale, and this can be corrected by following the instructions below:
- In the Adobe® Acrobat® program, from the 'File' menu, select the 'Page Setup' option.
- Select your plotting device in the window, and then select the 'Properties' button.
- Look for the 'Scaling' option (it will be displayed differently depending on plotter type) and change it from '100%' to '200%'.
- Plotting the file will now create a full-scale paper map.

Q. What is the difference between the two files in the 'Download' subsection?
A. The two files, one of which is a Microsoft® Word document (.doc) and the other an Adobe® Acrobat® file (.pdf), contain different information. The Microsoft® Word document contains only the text portion of the report. The Adobe® Acrobat® file contains all of the report contents (including text, figures, well and contract data sheets, data listings, etc.).

Q. How come I see an '.exe' file instead of an Adobe® Acrobat® file (.pdf) in the 'Download' subsection?
A. If the Adobe® Acrobat® file (.pdf) is very large, it will be compressed into a self-extracting zip file (.exe) for quicker downloading.

Q. How do I get my data file from the self-extracting zip file (.exe)?
A. First, navigate to the folder you downloaded the self-extracting zip file (.exe) to. Then double-click on the self-extracting zip file (.exe) to start the extraction process. You will be prompted for a folder to save the extracted file in (the default is the current folder you downloaded to). The data file will then automatically be extracted and ready for your use.

Q. Is there a way to save the data file directly to my computer without having to download the self-extracting zip file (.exe)?
A. If you are using Microsoft® Internet Explorer 4.0 or 5.0, yes. Before you download your data, you will be prompted to either 'Run this program from its current location' or 'Save this program to disk'. If you choose 'Save this program to disk', you will save the data in the self-extracting zip file (.exe) format. If you choose 'Run this program from its current location', the file will be saved directly as the data format. Be cautioned, however, that the download time will be longer if you choose the second method.

Q. What should I do when I get a 'Security Warning' after selecting 'Run this program from its current location'?
A. You should simply select 'Yes' to save your data.

Q. What is the 'Last 10 Days' subsection?
A. This is a rolling list of the new and modified articles of the last 10 days from the 'Current Period' subsection. It is created to allow easy access to the most recent articles written or modified by the editors. On selecting a region or country, this is the default view; and when selecting the region, it displays the 'Last 10 Days' subsection articles ordered by country.

Q. What is the 'Current Period' subsection?
A. It is a list of all articles that are relevant to the current situation in the selected country. There is not a specific time period for the 'Current Period' subsection, but rather articles in placed here when the country editor considers them to be pertinent to ongoing affairs.

Q. What is the 'Last 12 Months' subsection?
A. It is a repository of articles that are no longer relevant to the 'Current Period' subsection and were written during the last 12 months.

Q. What is the 'Company Monitor' subsection?
A. It is a list of the articles in the 'Current Period' subsection ordered by company rather than information type.

Q. What is the 'Compiled' subsection?
A. It provides a listing of all the articles in the 'Current Period' subsection from which you can select those you wish to compile in a customized document that meets your specific needs.

Q. What is the 'Download' subsection?
A. It is a repository of monthly-generated files of all of the compiled news articles for the selected country. There will be files for each of the last three months.

Q. What is the 'Annual Synopsis' subsection?
A. This subsection contains a download version of the most recent country Annual Synopsis.

A. It is a list of the available maps to view or download for the selected region or country.

A. It is a search function that allows you to search for articles within the 'Current Period' or 'Last 12 Months' subsections across multiple regions. You can also apply specific roles to further clarify your search.

Q. If I want to search for an article, do I have to search the entire database?
A. No, you do not. The search functionality under the 'Worldwide Search' subsection allows you to search for articles in the 'Current Period' subsections, the 'Last 12 Months' subsection, or both.
