Global Unique Well Identity Service

A significant information management challenge for the global E&P industry is the non-standard identifiers for well data. Companies spend large amounts of time and expertise trying to find and match well data from different sources.
To address this issue, IHS in collaboration with Energistics has developed the Well Identity Service for wells outside North America.
This unique service enables IHS to bring to bear its worldwide well database – the largest in the industry – to serve as a reference point and the provider of a Global Unique Well Identification (GUWI) number for researching and resolving conflicting wells. Read about how the service works.

The Global Unique Well Identifier service consists of three parts, the Well Registration Service, the Well Matching Service, and the Master Well Index. These services are available to IHS clients and non-clients alike, apart from the Master Well Index, which is only available to IHS clients:
Well Registration Service:
The Registration Service provides an IHS GUWI to each new wellbore record. Companies can register wellbores both pre- and post-spud. Registration requests can only come from the Operator of the well, the Government Regulatory body, or the National Oil Company, should it be an Equity Partner or affiliated to the Government Regulatory body.
To register a well, download the appropriate file, provide the requested well details, and send to GUWI@ihs.com. For pre-spud registration, the minimum attributes required are Well Name and Number, Operator, Country, Contract/Block, and Simple Well Classification (exploration or development). The Registration Service is provided at no charge.
Companies registering wells have the option of releasing their data into the Public Domain through the Public Well Index (PWI) on execution of the separate Consent Form. A company may place up to 120 registered wellbores into the PWI per calendar quarter gratis. A fee of US$50 per well, with a minimum charge of US$500 per calendar quarter, will be levied for wells in excess of this number.
Access to the PWI is unrestricted; to receive a copy of this data please complete the appropriate form and send to GUWI@ihs.com.
Well Matching Service:
The Matching Service provides the IHS GUWI for companies’ existing wellbore records. On request, IHS will match and return wellbore data with the appropriate GUWI. To match wells with a GUWI, download the appropriate file, provide the requested well details, and send to GUWI@ihs.com.
For current IHS customers the Matching Service is provided at no charge for single requests of less than 250 wells. IHS customers wishing to submit large numbers of wells in excess of this, must send their proposal to GUWI@ihs.com for scheduling and pricing. Non-IHS customers may submit up to 90 wellbores per calendar quarter for matching at no charge. A fee of US$25 per matched well, with a minimum charge of US$500 per calendar quarter, will be levied for wells in excess of this number. Non-IHS customers wishing to submit large numbers of wells in excess of 250, must send their proposal to GUWI@ihs.com for scheduling and pricing.
The Master Well Index:
This IHS proprietary dataset contains the GUWI and associated meta-data for US, Canadian and International wells. For a nominal fee it can be provided to current IHS customers for the geographic areas covered by their data subscription on request from their respective Account Manager.
