Analogue Studies
Whether worldwide or regional, using analogs helps geologists reduce uncertainties and provide a springboard for new play concepts. The Basin data in the IHS analytical (GIS) tools provide a powerful tool for ad-hoc analog queries or detailed studies where analogs are part of a comparative analysis.
For example, the map below shows all Intra-Cratonic basins (in yellow) with Devonian rocks that were deposited in a deltaic system. It shows the Amazonas Basin in Brazil and the Murzuq Basin in Algeria. The Basin Monitor helps to quickly understand the similarities and differences between these basins. Both basins have Devonian source rocks of Type II with TOCs around 5%. But whereas the Murzuq Basin has 3 billion barrels of oil, the Amazonas Basin only holds 2 million. The critical Petroleum System elements are shown in the diagrams. Much of the hydrocarbons generated in the Amazonas Basin have been lost during tectonic activity at the end of the Carboniferous, but the fact that the Amazonas Basin is only scarcely explored also plays an important role. Looking for analogues between these basins might reveal new geological trends and play fairways in under-explored areas.
Data and tools are designed for a quick comparison between basins, petroleum systems and plays and help the geologist to make analogue studies to prove future reserves in new areas.
