The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) will revise four standards in the power and energy field, including IEEE P400.2, IEEE PC62.72, IEEE P605a and IEEE P1137-Cor 1.

IEEE P400.2 - Guide for Field Testing of Shielded Power Cable Systems Using Very Low Frequency (VLF) will revise the 2004 standard.

The guide describes VLF withstand and other diagnostic tests and the measurements that are performed in the field on service-aged shielded medium voltage cables with extruded and laminated dielectric insulation.

VLF test methods use alternating current (AC) signals at frequencies less than 1 hertz.

IEEE PC62.72 - Guide for the Application of Surge-Protective Devices (SPD) for Low Voltage (1000 volts or less) AC Power Circuits will revise the 2007 standard to expand the scope of the guide to include not only externally generated transients but internal transients as well.

The language and terminology will also be updated to reflect new terminology describing SPDs. The revision will provide stronger recommendations regarding the application of SPDs and key issues involving the specification of SPDs, according to the IEEE.

IEEE P605a - IEEE Guide for Bus Design in Air Insulated Substations - Amendment - Guide for Bus Design in Air Insulated Substations will update three annexes in the original IEEE 605 standard and correct the main body of the guide.

IEEE P1137-Cor 1 - IEEE Guide for the Implementation of Inductive Coordination Mitigation Techniques and Application - Corrigendum 1 will correct the recommended value in Table 3, Longitudinal Balance Performance Thresholds.

IEEE also approved revisions to two standards first published in IEEE 516 - Guide for Maintenance Methods on Energized Power Lines and IEEE 1590 - Recommended Practice for the Electrical Protection of Communication Facilities Serving Electric Supply Locations Using Optical Fiber Systems.
