The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) approved two standards dealing with battery technologies for renewable energy systems.

IEEE 1561 - Guide for Optimizing the Performance and Life of Lead-Acid Batteries in Remote Hybrid Power Systems provides the rationale and guidance for operating lead-acid batteries in remote hybrid systems considering the system's load and the capacities of renewable-energy generators, dispatchable generators and batteries.

The information provided is for use by remote hybrid system designers, system evaluators, owners and operators.

IEEE 1562 - Guide for Array and Battery Sizing in Stand-Alone Photovoltaic (PV) Systems provides information to assist in sizing the array and battery of a stand-alone photovoltaic system.

These procedures are to assist designers, manufacturers, system integrators, users and laboratories with information necessary for sizing, modeling and evaluating the performance of stand-alone PV systems.

The IEEE also began work on IEEE P1187 - Recommended Practice for Installation Design and Installation of Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid Batteries for Stationary Applications, which is a revision of the standard previously approved in 2002.

This recommended practice will provide information on the storage, location, mounting, ventilation, instrumentation, preassembly, assembly and charging of valve-regulated lead-acid (VRLA) batteries and required safety practices.
