Tullow appears to have found new reservoir fairway in Uganda

Exploring the Butiaba area of the Albertine Graben, estimated to hold a resource potential of over one billion barrels of oil, Tullow Oil has drilled a dry hole that nonetheless may have positive implications for the area. The company says its Awaka 1 exploration well in Block 2 encountered water-bearing reservoir sands and has been abandoned. The well was drilled to a total depth of 700m and logged over 96m of net reservoir overlain by a thick sealing claystone. The lack of hydrocarbons may be related to a trap failure at this location. Nevertheless, Awaka 1 appears to have opened up a new reservoir fairway between the Victoria Nile Delta and Escarpment plays. The OGEC 750 rig will now move to drill the Kigogole 3 prospect in the Victoria Nile Delta Play in a fault block adjacent to the Kigogole 1 discovery. Drilling operations are scheduled to commence in early June.
