PetroChina scores again in China's Halatang area

Six more wells are planned for the Halatang area in the northern Tarim Basin after PetroChina tested oil and gas from the Ordovician at Ha 9. It follow the 2006 Ha 6 oil and gas discovery on the Lunnan High near the Halatang source kitchen. Completed in the Ordovician carbonate and Carboniferous sandstone, it indicated a possible 165 MMb oil in place within a 123 sq km area. In 2007, PetroChina acquired 500 sq km 3D seismic that indicated a larger area of prospective potential in the Ordovician Formation. Additional 3D seismic data was acquired in 2008, and in February 2009, Ha 7 tested oil and gas from the Ordovician. The planned wells include Ha 10, Ha 11, Ha601 and Ha702, with proposed total depths of more than 6,700m each and objectives in the Ordovician. PetroChina plans to build 3-million-tons-per-year production facilities in the Halatang area.
