Shanghai Boiler Works Ltd. (SBWL) became the first manufacturer in China to obtain nuclear accreditation under Section III of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code, which sets technical standards for the design and construction of items used in nuclear power plant facilities.

SWBL, the largest manufacturer of boilers in China, produces heavy chemical vessel and nuclear power equipment, in addition to providing steam generators, pressurizers and evaporators for China's Qinshan Nuclear Power Plant in Zhejiang Province.

With the ever-increasing need for power generation, industrial nations continue to seek alternative energy sources, including nuclear energy, to power their cities and factories. According to SWBL, the ASME certification, and the subsequent use of ASME's authorized nuclear code symbol stamps - N, NPT and NS - have positioned the Chinese manufacturer to expand its international scope for global nuclear power technology exchange and development.

By the year 2020, it is expected that nuclear power will generate nearly 4% of China's total capacity for electrical demand.

The ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code sets technical requirements for the design, fabrication and inspection of boilers and pressure vessels, as well as nuclear power plant components during construction. ASME Code Symbol Stamps are used to indicate that the stamped items conform to the latest edition of the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Codes. Utilization of the ASME Code Symbol Stamp is a means of complying with the laws and regulations in all 50 states in the U.S., and in all of the provinces of Canada. In addition, more than 100 countries accept the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code as a means of meeting their government safety regulations.
