Andris Piebalgs, European Commission (EC) energy commissioner, emphasized the potential benefits of international cooperation on biofuels, speaking at the International Biofuels Conference taking place in Sao Paulo, Brazil, from Nov. 17-20.
Piebalgs underlined the importance of biofuels in the EC's proposed directive aimed at increasing the share of renewable energy sources in European Union (EU) energy consumption to 20% in 2020. This draft directive contains a specific 10% target for renewables in transport, which is expected to be met largely by biofuels.
The 10% binding target is an opportunity for foreign partners to export biofuels to the EU market. The implementation of sustainability standards will require an extra effort from producers, but will ensure that the use of biofuels will not contradict environmental goals.
The EC will also monitor and report regularly on the effects of European biofuels policy on food prices, although the current analysis indicates that there is little impact.
The International Biofuels Conference is the occasion for 50 ministers from all over the world to discuss the many aspects of biofuels, including security of supply, sustainability and development of second-generation biofuels.
The event is a follow-up to the 2007 International Biofuels Conference in Brussels, which was a first step towards a transparent and frank dialogue with all stakeholders for a credible and sustainable international biofuels market.
