A sidetrack has been successfully drilled by Aberdeen–based Venture Production on the Barbarossa prospect in southern North Sea Block 47/9c. The 47/9c-11x well flowed 40 MMcfg/d from the Rotliegendes reservoir. Tubing pressure was more than 1,000 psi through a 96/64-inch choke. The Noble "Julie Robertson" J/U drilled the sidetrack out of the 47/9c-11 well, which was drilled in February 2008 to appraise a 1982 discovery. Venture says Barbarossa will be a subsea development in conjunction with the nearby Channon discovery which, during the summer of 2007, found gas in two Rotliegendes fault blocks extending across blocks 47/3h and 47/8c. Logs indicate a gas column in excess of 66m and net pay of 33m; a drillstem test yielded 55 MMcfg/d on a 56/64" choke. Estimated recoverable reserves for Channon and Barbarossa are a combined 70 to 80 Bcf. First gas is anticipated in 2009.
