Providence Resources plans summer spud on Hook Head prospect - Ireland

Providence Resources has contracted the Petrolia Drilling "Petrolia" S/S for a summer drilling program that comprises an appraisal well on the crest of the Hook Head prospect in Celtic Sea Block 50/11. The Hook Head prospect lies approximately 60km off the south coast of Ireland in some 70m of water. In 1971, the then operator, Marathon drilled a well, which encountered four hydrocarbon bearing Lower Cretaceous reservoirs over a gross 31m interval. Due to operational difficulties at the time, the well was not tested, so there is some uncertainty whether the reservoirs contain oil, gas or a combination of each Reworking the data with new 2D seismic acquired in 1998 suggests the reservoirs could contain up to 350 MMb of in-place reserves, with a potential gas cap. The proposed crestal location lies some 2km north-east of the first well, 50/11-1, and is thought to be 70m structurally higher.
