IHS Acquires Geological Consulting Services

Assets Include Nearly 40 Years’ Worth of Custom-Developed Structure Maps With Interpreted Formation Tops Data

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (June 6, 2007) – IHS Inc. (NYSE: IHS), a global provider of critical technical information, decision-support tools and related services, announced today it has acquired the inventory and assets of Geological Consulting Services–Houston, Inc. (GCS) of Houston, a provider of formation tops data files in electronic and other media covering South Texas, East Texas, North Louisiana, South Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

GCS has developed a database containing information on more than 120,000 oil and gas wells, with each well offering an average of 20 correlated tops.  Using those correlations, GCS has created hand-contoured structure maps, which are delivered through www.structuremaps.com.  The company’s formation tops database represents nearly 40 years of work building a consistently correlated tops file covering the Mesozoic regions of the Gulf Coast from South Texas through the Florida Panhandle.  Formation tops, and the structure maps associated with them, are used to study subsurface geology, map formation extent and dimension, and are essential to oil & gas explorationists conducting regional analysis or developing new prospects.

“GCS’s data is a welcome addition to our growing family of subsurface data, aimed at arming E&P teams with comprehensive coverage of easily integrated data sources for faster, deeper analysis in their core areas,” said Mark Rose, senior vice president of the U.S. Energy Business Unit for IHS.  “GCS’s structure maps are well-respected, well-researched and employ well-executed methods to depict oil and gas data.  We look forward to continuing to provide both GCS and IHS clients with the quality products and service they have relied on from GCS.”

“I have been a part of GCS since 1971,” said Carl Dillistone, president of GCS.  “Our inventory of structure maps has been built carefully and painstakingly over many years.  They are now complemented by the expansive IHS E&P data set and its leading analytical subsurface software, PETRA®, which will be tremendously helpful to our customers who work in this exciting, but challenging and fast-paced industry.  This powerful combination enables them to make decisions more rapidly and with greater confidence, which is important when assessing opportunities in such a competitive environment.”

The acquisition, Rose added, also brings additional technical expertise to IHS, including geologists who developed the GCS offerings and will continue to enrich and maintain those assets, ensuring consistency and continuity going forward.

The Energy segment of IHS provides integrated exploration and production information, software, consulting services and industry insight to oil and gas companies worldwide.
