Angola’s Sonangol Announces 10 Blocks will be Offered in 2007/2008 Licensing Round

HOUSTON (September 13, 2007) – Sonangol E.P., the national oil company of Angola, has announced that 10 blocks will be offered for tender in its forthcoming E&P licensing round planned for late 2007. Those blocks include Onshore Cabinda Centro, onshore Kwanza blocks KON 11 and 12, block 9 in shallow water, deepwater blocks 19, 20 and 21 in the Kwanza Basin, and newly designated ultra-deepwater blocks 46, 47 and 48 in the Lower Congo Basin.

Sonangol has not yet released all technical details relative to these blocks, but the IHS Global E&P database offers these initial details:

  • Block Onshore Cabinda Centro is located in the lower Congo Basin of Cabinda Province.  It covers 1,125 km2.
  • Block 9 straddles shallow and deep waters of the Kwanza Basin, and occupies a total area of 4,937km2.
  • KON 11 and 12 are onshore south of Luanda in the Bengo Province.  They are located in the Kwanza Basin with areas of 1,000 km2 each.
  • Blocks 19, 20 and 21 are deepwater blocks in the Kwanza Basin.  Block 19 covers 4,860 km2, block 20 covers 4,856 km2, and block 21 covers 4,882 km2.

IHS Inc. has been engaged by Sonangol E.P. to help facilitate this licensing round for Angola in late 2007.  Road shows are planned for Luanda, Houston and London but dates have not been set. Information on pre-qualification, road shows and terms of reference will be announced by Sonangol E.P. as details become available.
